As i have mentioned in previous posts, we inherited my Moms house, but not her taste buds! Nothing was wrong with the Mom’s color choices and designs, but some changes were definitely in order…
So what to do???
Our deck was very tired and needed new paint at least. So we researched several deck paint options, and we came up with Olympic Rescue It.
After much debate we chose a paint color and three hundred non-refundable dollars later…I changed my mind!!
Let me explain..
There was so much damage from our tenants dogs, I decided I needed to really clean it up before we started.
I had a brainstorm or a brain something!
I thought I would sand a patch and see what was under it and it was gorgeous.
I then had to tell Doug the unthinkable. That we needed to forget the special paint we had just bought and….,
WE HAD TO SAND THE WHOLE DECK!!!….
WHAT!!!! Doug just stared at me, at loss for words.
It wasn’t really a fight, but after a few strong words Doug actually said he agreed. (he has learned that I am usually right in my creative weirdnesses…) He just wished I had tested the deck before we bought the paint.
Here it is, still sitting in our garage.

You want it? Come and get it!! It’s free! Four, containers holding 2.67 Gallons!! Blue /Grey tint Deck Paint!
We rented and sander and went for it!
I won’t lie. It wasn’t easy and took probably 4 days, but the results are amazing!!
My mom did do a crazy good design on the deck. Sort of built like the deck of a ship. Doug and I sanded everything, but we did hire a painter to paint all the backs of the benches, stairs and rails white.
Very Cape Cod!
Then we sealed it.
I think we made the right decision but there is nothing wrong with paint. It was just not right for our deck.
We’re actually due to re seal our deck…these pictures were taken 3 years ago. But that will be a very quick sanding and then re seal. A couple hours for up keep VS. many days from neglect.
So what are the lessons here?
I guess learn from our mistakes! When I do blow it, its’ a doozy!
